I haven't posted in quite some time (as you may have noticed from viewing my archives). I've been very busy with this new Yahoo Group, Long Live TechTV. The web site, www.techtv.com, may no longer exist, but after what's transpired over the last three weeks, hundreds of us can now go on with our lives. If you haven't read my post Why I Created "Long Live TechTV", you may want to before continuing on with this article.
What's happened over the last three weeks? Let me see, where do I begin? Wasn't it Albert Einstein who said something about all things being relative? With that being the case and all things considered, this last three weeks seems like MONTHS!
We have our moderator team in place. The team consist of Chris, Katie, Alan and me. These people are great! I can't say enough good things about them. They're dedicated, honest, faithful, diligent, and some of the hardest working people I know. Working side by side them is a pleasure and an honor. I truly believe God had His hand on the four of us coming together for such a time as this!
We have literally hundreds of resources archived from the original www.techtv.com website. All accessible inside Long Live TechTV, members can find themes, graphics and wallpapers from Call For Help, TechTV, and The Screen Savers inside our "Files" section. Direct links to many of those "Downloads of the Day" and "Free Files" are tucked away in the "Links" section of the group. Numerous articles from the original techtv.com site have been posted on the Message Board. Lots of photos have been uploaded into the "Photos" section. Audio and video clips are available for download from within the group. There's much more, and I'm referring only to the resources INSIDE the group itself.
The Moderators have teamed up on web design projects, and they're directing members' projects that include such spectacular resources as: past articles reproduced from the original techtv.com, audio and video archives on a mass scale, hints and tips pages that teach you how to fix your 'personal confuser' problems, photo album archives with loads of pictures that have everyone from Leo Laporte to Sarah Lane, and so much more. It would take days and days of log entries to elaborate on everything.
About the popularity of this group. Hmm, where do I begin there? Let me see, at the time of this post we have nearly 675 members. To some of you who're members of online communities numbering into the thousands, 675 may seem a nominal amount; but you've got to consider that they all joined in just the last three weeks. Long Live TechTV may not be the biggest group at Yahoo.com, but it sure may possibly be the fastest growing group!
Becky Worley joined the group, right off, along with other employees of TechTV. One of the biggest events in this group's short history would definitely have to be that Leo Laporte himself joined the ranks as a member. Talk about a morale booster for everyone experiencing the pains of the TechTV Downfall. I personally (excuse my language here, but I have no other way to say it and convey the FEELING I got when it happened) pooped a BRICK when I saw the new member notification in my inbox, and it had Leo Laporte's name on it! One of my greatest heroes of all time came and joined a group that I created. Absolutely astounding to me! I'm so honored to have that man as a part of Long Live TechTV that I am without words, and that's one thing I am never short on is words.
Another really cool thing happened recently (I know, this whole group-thing is recent). I don't know if you're familiar with DMOZ, but http://www.dmoz.org/ is considered by many to be the Internet DIRECTORY of all directories. Within the first couple weeks of its existence, DMOZ listed Long Live TechTV in its directory. I tried three different times to get our website listed in that thing, and I was rejected each time, but they listed this group before it was even a month old. Yet another outstanding accomplishment in the last three weeks!
What was it that made TechTV's "Call For Help" and "The Screen Savers" such a success? Obviously, it was REAL people helping REAL people with their computer and technology problems. Though the shows and website have vanished (TSS has been carried over to G4, but it's not the same), hundreds of people are helping one another via chat, instant messenger, and the message board within the framework of the new Long Live TechTV group. It's heartwarming to see the interactivity that made TechTV famous CONTINUE today even though the shows and site are gone! Just like Leo always said,
"If you're having problems with your personal confuser, don't scream, don't yell, just call for help!"You know what? That's what the members at Long Live TechTV are doing, and the ones who know the answers are THERE to help the ones in need.
I have so much more I could say about the phenomenal growth and expansion of our new group, but I'll close by saying this:
"TechTV may have come to an end. Call For Help is gone. The Screen Savers is still here over on G4TV, but it's quickly transforming into yet another gaming plug for that network. The six year era may be over, but the legacy will live on because Long Live TechTV Is Here To Stay!"
