Thousands of people are experiencing a wide array of emotions recently over the G4/TechTV merger. I guess if you're a gamer, you're all for it, but for those people who've been dedicated viewers of TechTV over the years and have little or no interest in gaming, the reaction is one of disgust.
I must admit, I am one of the latter. I like to game with my kids, but I definitely don't put it at the top of my priority list. My main reasons for watching TechTV over the last two years have been for the computer education and, as time passed, the attachment I acquired for the people of two shows, namely Call For Help and The Screen Savers. My two favorite people of the entire network are Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton. I appreciate all of them who worked both shows, but Leo and Pat have become the icons of TechTV, and without them, well, it's just not the same! To me, it's like having a family without the parents.
Something positive has evolved, however, over the last couple days. As we near (what I am now calling G-DAY) the 28th of May, I couldn't sit back and watch a LEGACY just deteriorate right before my very eyes and not do something. The first thing I did was jet over to Yahoo.com's Groups and initiate a search for any TechTV groups. I found Leo's, which I joined immediately, but his is primarily a mailing-subscription type membership (which is SO FINE with me). I was looking for more of an interactive community where I could join with other TechTV-Techies and share like we've been doing at the original TechTV.com. Needless to say, I joined a couple of fan sites, but none of them offered a TRUE GROUP environment like I wanted. Disappointed, I turned to my web design editor and proceeded to do a tribute to my most favorite shows - and their people - of all time.
I knew that after G4 takes over TechTV, many of the peeps who I've come to love would go their seperate ways. Who's to say WHERE they'd be in the next few months? So, I put together this TRIBUTE, and designed it to be a Road Map leading to all the sites, blogs, moblogs, forums, and whatever else of all the people from TechTV. I began putting it together on Friday - May 21st, and by day's end, I realized what else I had to do: I knew that all of us TechTV-Die-Hards NEEDED a community, a group, where we could all gather after they shut down our old www.techtv.com. That led me to what has turned out to be the success story behind the merger story.
Over the last couple days, nearly 100 people (at the time of this post) have made their way over to the brand new Long Live TechTV group at Yahoo.com. Heartbroken, saddened, and even a few who're disgusted, they are one-by-one drifting to a place that'll soon become their new home on the Web. A place where they can share what they know, learn from others, communicate their feelings, share links - files - scripts - ideas - and knowledge with one another. The response, for such a short span of time, has been overwhelming! I am posting this article today with hope in my heart that a LEGACY called TechTV will not die even though the entity itself has come to an end!
